In this activity, we are going to raise your hair against gravity and bend water !
What you will need
A balloon
Water
What you need to do
Just run the balloon on your head and then slowly move the balloon over your head and watch what happens. Your hair starts to raise towards the balloon!
Now rub the balloon some more on your hair and then slowly move it close to a tap flowing water. The water bends towards the balloon !
What is happening here ?
Static electricity is at play here. As you run the balloon on your hair, the electrons on your hair gets transferred to the balloon and the balloon gets negatively charged. Now there is a difference in electrical charge between your hair and the balloon. The balloon is negatively charged as electrons are negative charges, and your hair is less negatively charged as some electrons have transferred onto the balloon. The difference in charges creates an attractive force.
Similarly, water is made up of both positive and negatively charged particles. The positive charged particles are attracted towards the negatively charged electrons on the balloon.
